Fr. Thomas gave a homily at Mass one day that I have remembered often. He held up a banana and said something to the effect that “when God made this banana he was thinking of us.” He went on to describe how nicely God encased the banana with the thick peel to keep it protected so we could enjoy the delicious banana.
Now this may sound like a very simple message, and it is. But it had a profound and lasting effect on me. It is hard for me not to think of this message when I eat a banana. I think, “Wow God, you were thinking of me when you created this banana!”
However, now my thoughts have gone past just the banana. I think, “Wow, you were thinking of me when you made this or that,” and it goes on and on. He is thinking of me all the time. And God is thinking of you all the time. In fact, He is wild about you.
Scripture says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5. He knew us before we were born. He has known us even before He created us. He knows everything about us. “O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You know my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways.” Psalm 139:1-4.
And He thought of us as individuals when He suffered and died on the cross for us because of His great love. He wanted us to live in Heaven with Him. He would have died just for you if you were the only one.
Do you know you are Christ’s beloved? He looks at you with tenderness and cares about every aspect of your life.
So if you don’t feel too special to God — the next time you eat some food, think about how God created that food just for you. He thought of you. And He thought of you as He brought up the sun today, and when you turned on the faucet and water came out, and when you saw that clothing or object in the store that was exactly what you were looking for, and the list goes on and.
You are special! God is crazy in love with you. Talk to Him in your own words. He likes that.
And maybe even think about HIM the next time you eat a banana.
God bless,
Mary Ann / Mother Hen
