Yesterday I was watching two of my grandchildren while their mother took one of the others to an activity. I was sitting between the children reading some books to them. When I was reading the fourth book during the midday heat, I got so sleepy. I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before due to a singing cricket in our bedroom. After the fourth book, I said to the children, “Grandma is going to rest here on the floor for a few minutes.” So I laid on my side on the floor.
About a minute later, my 4-year-old granddaughter came and put a baby blanket over me, and then she brought me a pillow for my head. I was so touched by her spontaneous act of kindness.
We recently celebrated the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When I was meditating on their love and how I felt their presence throughout the day, my thoughts and heart went immediately to when Quinn put that blanket on me. I genuinely felt the love of Jesus and Mary when that loving act of care was done toward me. It was an intimate experience and to think it came through a small child. They truly are the greatest among us.
I have a lot to learn from them.
God bless you!
