Are you trying to put on a good show for other people, pretending to be someone you are not?

This week’s episode

Woman Praying in Church

We live in a culture of lies: in the media, politicians, salespeople — lying is expected and accepted for the most part.

But Jesus warns us to be on guard against hypocrisy, pretending to be someone we are not.

Father Thomas used to say that pretense is a big obstacle for religious people. We try to look good instead of being good. But God can always see our hearts. We can’t fool God.

Listen in to this episode as we learn more about the dangers of pretense.

Takeaways

  • Jesus warns us to be careful not to do our religious deeds before people. Don’t be show offs.
  • Jesus wants us to know Him. He doesn’t want us to pretend we know Him.
  • Are we doing things so that other people might see and notice, or are we doing them to please God?
  • Jesus looks past all of our deeds and looks at our hearts.

Scriptures

  • Matthew 6:1-4, 5-6
  • Proverbs 26:24
