From a homily that Fr. Nathan O’Halloran SJ gave at The Lord’s Ranch on the feast of the Solemnity of Mary, January 1, 2018.
Today we celebrate a person who made a decision, and then stuck with her decision for her whole life, no matter how difficult it was. We need to gain from Mary the wisdom to know what needs to happen this year and then the courage to put it into practice.
Mary is not an optional devotion for us Catholics. You don’t have to have a devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, or to the scapular, or the Miraculous Medal. But you have to have a relationship with Mary, and it needs to be a significant part of our spirituality. What’s important is for you to find a way to have a devotion to Mary that works.
If you have a devotion to her, ask the Lord to deepen it. If you don’t have a very good one, don’t force it. Ask Mary to show you what’s going to work for you. And then just follow her down the road.
