Rivalry and jealousy are connected. Rivalry is expected in sports – you want to beat your main rival and make them look bad. But in the Bible it is the opposite.
- Think of others as better than yourself.
- If you want to be great, be the servant of all.
- If you want to be first in the Kingdom, be last.
The disciples of Jesus fought among themselves to see who was the best. Jesus put a little child in their midst and said, “If you want to be great, become like a little child.”
If I am envious, I am in competition with somebody. If we are rivals, we can’t work together.
The Virgin Mary and John the Baptist are good examples of not being jealous. They were both humble and gave God the glory. John the Baptist said of Jesus, “He must increase; I must decrease.”
If you find yourself jealous, get rid of it quickly. Because Scripture says, “Jealousy rots the bones.”
