The Word of God repeatedly tells us to praise the Lord. God doesn’t tell us to praise Him because He has low self-esteem or needs affirmation. He tells us to praise because it is for our own good. We are evangelizing ourselves when we praise the Lord, telling ourselves “this is who God is!”
We need to train ourselves to praise the Lord. It doesn’t come automatically. We need to train our minds. One way we can train our minds to praise the Lord is to recall what God has done for us in the past. We can write up our own version of Psalm 136, recalling what God has done for us.
The temptation, when we are going through a trial or problem, is to be totally immersed in it and absorbed by it. By praising God and keeping our eyes fixed on Him, things come into proper perspective.
