Lent is a grace-filled time of preparation to come closer to God. We often think about what we are going to give up during Lent, and fasting is a good thing. But let’s look at what God says is the kind of fasting that pleases Him. He talks about this in Isaiah 58.
Setting the oppressed free – how do we do that? One way is to forgive each other. When we pray the Our Father, we are asking God to forgive us in the measure that we forgive others. That’s scary. If we have not forgiven someone, we’re basically telling God that He not forgive us. So we need to forgive regularly and often because we are all sinners and hurt one another.
So a good Lenten resolution is that before you go to bed, go through your day and see if there is anyone you need to forgive that day. Then make a decision to forgive them.
Participating in a 40 Days for Life campaign is another good way to break the yokes of oppression, by being a witness for life and praying in reparation for the sin of abortion in our world.
