Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don’t remember growing older
When did they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he get to be so tall?
Wasn’t it yesterday when they were small?
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.
“Sunrise, Sunset” from the musical Fiddler on the Roof,
written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick.
I hope you read the words of this song carefully because each sentence is packed with truth. Perhaps at this time, you cannot imagine your rambunctious toddlers grown. I am sure I didn’t — especially when they all had chickenpox!
As I watched my baby girl get married on February 8th, a film passed through my mind of her from a baby in my arms to the altar. As happy as I was and am for her, I thought to myself, “Where did those years go?”
The reason for this writing is to say enjoy these years with your children. Live your season to the full. Love and laugh and hug them and kiss them. It really does fly by.
Those seedlings are blossoming even as you gaze.
God bless you!
